What do Prototypes Prototype?

What do Prototypes Prototype?

I still have to read the above mentioned paper but i read soemthing very simillar in MID textbook.. and

Here is what I found very amazing, never realizing before that I too am victim of this. People start evaluating the prototypes rather then a particular aspect that prototype is made for. Prototype should only be taken consciously as help in evaluating a particular aspect.

I am just pasting the original email that pointed me to this link at first place..

hi!

here is the reference we talked about last Friday when we did our prototype presentation

Houde, S., Hill C., (1998) “What do Prototypes Prototype?”. In Handbook of Human
Computer Interaction (2nd Ed.), M. Helander, T. Landauer, and P. Prabhu (eds.): Elsevier
Science B. V.: Amsterdam, 1997

about the evaluation, I would like to leave some words for you, specially for the ones that will evaluate our prototyope:
- Please evaluate and criticize as much as possible BUT argue for what you say ;)
- I can find a lot of problems in our work, so feel free to be exaustive in your critices (as long as they are supported)

BUT

- look at our personas and scenarios, as they are the ones deciding about the design so, don't put your opinion as the first plan but instead try to impersonate the personas and see what are their goals, whiches and behaviours. Our prototype was motivated by them.
- and remember that this is a low-fidelity prototype and we didn't discuss "look and feel" but rather the role of a ticket machine in the passengers life.
